Introduction

We are a local community group that was set up in 2009 to help Cupar become a thriving, environmentally friendly town. The group aims to raise awareness of green issues and to promote and support changes to more sustainable lifestyles.  Sustainable Cupar is open to anyone with an interest in the future of our historic market town. We have a number of sub-groups that have separate meetings and events that concentrate on their particular interests: Natural Environment, including the FAB sub-group, Town development and Energy.

Bright Ideas for Sustainability

Sustainable Cupar’s Ideas Day on Saturday 5th was thoroughly enjoyed by 25 participants who became quickly engaged in the discussion and put forward some excellent suggestions.  The only ‘down’ side was the poor acoustic in the Corn Exchange lower hall.

The audience delighted in the improvements soon to be in place on the Old Moor Road and suggested that the upgraded route would benefit from an interpretation board explaining the history of the drove road, its quarry and magazine. Additional plans for ‘active travel’ in particular safe cycling routes around town were welcomed especially by parents in the audience. The Underground-style map of cycle routes invoked much interest. A bike hire facility and central map showing safe cycling routes were suggested for the town.

The hall was buzzing with ideas about how to protect and encourage pollinators such as bees, beetles and butterflies. The Fruit and Blossom group will be sowing a perennial wild flower meadow in the community orchard and edible planting was suggested for the Ferguson Square and for the gap sites in the town centre.  What about fruit trees in the Haugh Park?

The presentation on sustainable housing generated most interest, with audience grasping the ideas of filtered permeability and the importance of orientation in builds like Village Homes.  Participants suggested tax increases for builders using unsustainable materials, and called for self-build opportunities in new schemes. The detailed presentation showing how heat from solar panels and sewage systems can be stored for use in the winter in district heat networks was very well received and the audience agreed this technology should be integral to all new builds.

A no car zone, sustainable local employment opportunities, vegetable growing and better night life in Cupar were amongst the other ideas the audience offered.  A dozen or so stayed behind at the end, partly to continue eating cake, but also to hear about how Carbon Conversations can help individuals and communities focus on improving their carbon footprint.  The full report of Sustainable Cupar’s Ideas Day will form the basis of the group’s future action plans, and will feed in to Cupar Development Trust’s CuparCould project.

Snowdrops will be planted along the Moor Road on Sat 12th March.  All welcome to come and help.  Please meet at the Cupar end at 2pm.
