Active Travel

What is Active Travel?

Active travel is just that. Any travel that is also physically active such as walking, wheeling (using a wheelchair or mobility aid) or cycling.

Why is it important to Cupar?

Currently, Cupar is in dire need of safe, easily negotiated routes around the town for non-car users.

There are many ways in which this could be improved to make Cupar easier and safer to navigate without a car.

How is Sustainable Cupar working to improve Active Travel opportunities in Cupar?

The Active Travel group campaigns to improve the Active Travel options in and around Cupar.

The current main campaigns are:

  • Red Route: Developing a safer, off road route from Castlehill Primary School to Bell Baxter High School.
  • Bikeability in Cupar Schools: Improving access for pupils in schools to learn bike maintence and cycle training.
  • Community Car Club: Exploring the possibility of a Community Car Club.
  • Bus Services map: A map outlining all the Bus Services in Cupar, kindly created by Ken Cameron, one of the Active Travel members. See the link below to access it.

In 2023, we took part in:

  • Consultation: A consultation on Active Travel route between Cupar and Guardbridge, organised by Arup on behalf of Fife Council & SESTrans to establish the feasibility. Something Sustainable Cupar has long been advocating for!
  • Raising awareness: Ran the first Big Wee Cycle as part of Cupar's Big Weekend in September 2023. It was well received by all those who took part and had great engagement and input from Greener Kirkcaldy, Taycoasters, the Community Police, Fife Council Parks team and the Big Weekend. Look out for the next one in 2024!
  • Campaigning: The campaigning for Red Route is ongoing with the proposed plans currently with Fife Council Planning to review,
  • Input to the future of Cupar: Input into the Cupar Local Place Plan being developed by the Cupar Development Trust.
  • Exploring Funding Opportunities: Sought advice from Sustrans to employ external expertise to develop a set of proposals ‘to make Cupar a Safe Town for an unaccompanied 12-year-old’. The next tranche of funding has not yet been released and it seems likely that future funding will be distributed through local councils.
  • Bus Services Map: Ken Cameron, Active Travel member, used his extensive experience as a Bus driver/organiser to design a map of the Bus Services in Cupar. Printed copies, funded by Sustainable Cupar, can be found at the Cupar Library, Fluthers Car Park, Community Voice and Age Concern. See click the ink below if you'd like to see it!
