Community Orchard Pruning with Andrew Lear

A pruning and planting event took place at Orchard Walk on Sunday 09 February 2014.

We pruned the trees in the community orchard and along the walk as well. The fruit trees we planted last year got their first prune.

Community Orchard Bulb Planting

We under planted the fruit trees with crocuses and early daffodils. Snakes head fritillary were planted around the pond area.

FAB rented an apple press for the day and we juiced apples and pears

There was also an opportunity to talk with FAB members about the fruit order

Farmers' Market

The FAB group had a stall at the Farmers' Market in Cupar, to promote this year's fruit order.

Monimal pruning and planting

We volunteered at Monimail to help them plant new cordons and prune existing fruit trees.

Orchard walk

Volunteers from Sustainable Cupar's FAB (fruit and blossom) group started the winter pruning of the fruit trees in Orchard Walk. These trees were planted by the council and Sustainable Cupar is now managing these fruit trees. Some volunteers collected litter and four bags of rubbish was collected.

The group was awarded 250 from an Action Earth campaign organised by CSV (Community Service Volunteers). The Fruit and Blossom group have been able to buy a set of pruning tools using this fund. These tools are available to members of the group for pruning. We are also spending some of the money on tuition on pruning and planting with Andrew Lear. The other part of the money is being spent on bird and bat boxes for orchard walk. FAB has put up 15 boxes already along the walk.

Everybody can get involved with conserving biodiversity. We have rich habitats in Cupar - come and join us and have some good fun and exercise whilst enjoying the outdoors.

Juicing at Hill of Tarvit

This event proved to be a big success. The juice produced was consumed merrily by those producing and the public.

The pear juice was especially delicious and thanks for that go to the owners of a lovely old pear tree in Cupar who let us pick up their windfalls (as seen in this picture).

Let us know if you have any windfalls that we could gather this year!

newburgh orchard

Past events

Some of the FAB group members visited Newburgh in May to see the community orchard there.

We were inspired by what the Newburgh orchard group (NOG) have done over the past ten years. We had a walk round the town guided by one of the NOG group and given a brief history of the town's fruit growing past.

Some of us also attended a jam making event in Newburgh later that month.

The community orchard in Newburgh is open to the public at all times and everyone can pick the fruit when ready.

FAB bee event

Thanks to a group member, Bryan Rollo, we were lucky enough to hold a bee event recently. Six members really enjoyed this interesting informative talk on beekeeping. Bryan's son Ian Rollo has kept bees since he was a boy, carrying on a tradition in the family, his grandparents kept bees.
